Trip Overview

Island Peak Climbing with Everest Base Camp Trekking

Imja Tse, commonly known as Island Peak, is a stunning mountain located in the Sagarmatha National Park in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal. The name “Island Peak” was given in 1953 by Eric Shipton’s expedition team, as the peak appears like an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. The Island Peak summit climb—less commonly known as the Imja Tse climb—combined with the Everest Base Camp trek, offers an unforgettable adventure in the Himalayas of Nepal. This experience is specially designed for energetic and physically fit trekkers with little or no previous mountaineering experience.

Standing at 6,189 meters (20,305 ft), Island Peak is one of the most popular climbing peaks in the Everest region. It features a spectacular and heavily glaciated west face rising directly from the Lhotse Glacier. As a designated trekking peak, Island Peak has minimal technical difficulty, making it a great introduction for beginner climbers eager to step into the exciting world of mountaineering.

Our adventure takes us into the heart of the Khumbu Valley and the rich Sherpa culture. Before attempting the summit, we first trek to some of the region’s most iconic destinations, including Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and Kala Patthar (5,545m), where we enjoy close-up views of Mount Everest (8,848.86m)—the highest peak in the world—and many other towering Himalayan giants. After sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley, our journey begins with a scenic 30–40 minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From there, we trek along the Dudh Koshi River Valley, passing through Manju (home to the Sagarmatha National Park office) before reaching the gateway to Everest—Namche Bazaar (3,440m). In Namche, we spend two nights to acclimatize and explore the vibrant local market. We also hike to the famous Hotel Everest View, located within Sagarmatha National Park. Opened in 1971, this hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Everest (8,848.86m) from every room. At 13,000 feet, it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records (2004) as the highest-placed hotel in the world. From Namche Bazaar, we continue on to Tengboche, which offers magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse (8,516m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Khangtega (6,782m), and more. Tengboche is also home to the famous Tengboche Monastery—an important spiritual center in the region.

After proper acclimatization, we head toward Chhukung, where preparations begin for the Island Peak climb. While it is possible to summit the peak in a single day, our experience has shown that spending two nights at Island Peak Base Camp significantly improves acclimatization and summit success. Eventually, we make our summit attempt. Once on top of Island Peak, we’ll spend a few memorable moments taking in the views and capturing photos before descending. We then trek back to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu, where our trip concludes. For those interested in extending their adventure, we also offer additional activities such as jungle safaris, Pokhara or Lumbini tours, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, zip-lining, paragliding, and volunteer opportunities. Our team at Peaceful Step Himalaya Trek is here to support and organize every detail of your Nepal experience.
