Pattale Village: A Gateway to Everest Views
Pattale village is a beautiful settlement located in the eastern part of Nepal, in the lower Everest region of Solukhumbu District, under Solududhkunda Municipality. Situated at an altitude of 2,840 meters above sea level, Pattale is one of the best and nearest destinations for Everest sightseeing from the capital, Kathmandu. It is also one of the most affordable options, located approximately 240 kilometers from the Kathmandu Valley. The journey to Pattale takes about 7 to 8 hours by jeep, though buses are also available from Chabahil Chowk, Kathmandu. The route begins from Thamel and continues through Dhulikhel, Sindhuli, and Khurkot, following the scenic BP Highway and crossing the fast-flowing Sunkoshi River. Lunch is typically enjoyed at Mane Bhanjyang village (at Subas’s sister’s home). From there, the road turns left toward Lagagale, passing through Okhaldhunga, Biplate, Chitre, and Todke, finally ascending to Pattale Bazaar. The road becomes slightly straighter near Thade and Dhap. Early in the morning, visitors can hike to Thale Dada (also known as Tower Dada/Hill) to witness a breathtaking sunrise. Pattale offers panoramic mountain views, including Mount Everest (8,848.86m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Thamserku (6,618m), Taboche (6,495m), Numbur (6,958m), Gaurishankar (7,135m), Mera Peak (6,461m), and many other stunning peaks.
Pattale is perfect for Everest sightseeing without strenuous trekking. It is ideal for elderly visitors, children, and those who cannot venture into higher-altitude areas. In March and April, the village is painted red with blooming rhododendron flowers—the national flower of Nepal—and it turns white in winter, covered in snow. Nearby attractions include Laureshwor Baba Temple, Chagesthan Temple, and surrounding rhododendron forests. The region is perfect for photography and nature walks. The Peaceful Step Himalaya Trek is also popular here, offering light trail runs and scenic forest paths. From Pattale Village, it’s a short 2 km walk to the Gauritap Temple. On May 9th, a grand festival was held at Gauritap to promote the Lower Everest Car Tour. Attendees stayed in tents and gathered around the campfire under the open sky. The event drew over 26 popular figures, including artists, singers, entrepreneurs, and other notable personalities such as Rajesh Hamal and Ani Choying Drolma. Everyone camped overnight, making it a truly memorable experience.
Subas, he captured some beautiful photos of Hikari, making the experience even more special. Hikari had joined Subas Magar, a local guide, to visit Pattale Village. She had previously attempted to reach Everest Base Camp but had to return to Kathmandu by helicopter due to altitude sickness. Still, her dream of seeing Everest remained alive.Determined to find a place where she could see Everest without the strenuous trek, she came across the name “Pattale Village.” She asked over ten travel agencies about it, but none of them had heard of the place. Undeterred, she walked around Thamel, visiting different travel offices. Eventually, she entered Norbulinka and asked one of the travel planners, “Do you know about Pattale Village?” He didn’t know either — but by a stroke of luck, Subas was there at that moment. He explained everything about Pattale Village and later took her there himself, fulfilling her long-held dream of seeing Mount Everest. Subas was the first person to organize camping at Gauritap and is also a promoter of tourism in the area
Pattale is home to a community of Magars and Sherpas and is especially popular among domestic tourists for its mountain views and photography opportunities, particularly at the Himalai Homestay. Although there are 9 lodges available, they are simpler than those found in more commercial trekking areas—but they provide comfortable and welcoming stays. The warm hospitality of the locals is a highlight of any visit. Guests are welcomed with a special tea known as Shu Chiya—a traditional local drink made from wheat flour and ghee, slightly salty in taste—along with locally brewed raksi made from apples. While not quite like the famous apple brandy of Mustang, it has a similar flavor.Traditional meals include dhindo (a thick porridge made by gradually adding flour—typically buckwheat, wheat, millet, or cornmeal—to boiling water), rilduk (a mashed potato dish), sisnu (nettle leaf curry), gundruk curry, and other local specialties. Organic potatoes, grown in nearby Bung village, are a local favorite and are widely available in Pattale, Banbhade, Mude, and Thade villages.Early in the morning, visitors often hike to Thale Dada (also known as Tower Dada or Tower Hill) to witness a stunning sunrise. In spring, particularly in March and April, the village is bathed in a vibrant red hue from blooming rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower. In winter, the area transforms into a serene white landscape covered in snow.
