Langtang Kyanjin Ri Trekking
The Langtang region is the third most popular trekking area in Nepal. The Langtang Valley, in particular, is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Located close to Kathmandu, it offers a wide variety of scenery, quick access to high mountains, good accommodation options, and many possible trekking combinations.
The Langtang Valley has long been a favorite among trekkers due to its expansive mountain views, fascinating Tamang culture, gentle trekking pace, and easy accessibility from Kathmandu. In 2015, a massive earthquake and subsequent landslides had a devastating impact on the region. However, thanks to aid and reconstruction efforts, the Langtang Valley has reopened to trekkers once again.
Many survivors of the landslides were forced to leave their homes, but they have since returned to reclaim their homeland, rebuild their houses, and re-establish their lives. Skilled carpenters and masons from Solukhumbu and Okhaldhunga contributed to the reconstruction, and now you’ll see houses similar in style to those found in the Everest region.
The trek begins at Syabrubesi (1,470m) and ascends gradually through ever-changing landscapes and traditional Tamang villages, eventually reaching Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m. From here, the trail leads to a high alpine environment filled with pastures, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks on the border with Tibet.
Although the route passes through remote and lightly populated areas, there are plenty of lodges along the way offering food and accommodation. The Langtang trail is known for its exceptional diversity in both scenery and culture.Kyanjin Gompa serves as the perfect base for spectacular day hikes. You can enjoy close-up views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers, including Langtang Lirung (7,246m), Kimshung (6,781m), and Langshisha Ri (6,370m).
One popular hike leads to a viewpoint on the glacial moraine at 4,300m, offering breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung. The most well-known day hike is to the
Kyanjin Ri viewpoint (4,600m), while a more challenging option is the ascent to Tsergo Ri (4,984m). Another rewarding trek leads up the valley to the pastures around Langshisha Kharka for more stunning vistas. After exploring the area, the trek returns to Syabrubesi by retracing the same path through the valley.
