Trip Overview

Upper Mustang Trek – Into the Hidden Buddhist Kingdom & Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal

The Upper Mustang Trek transports you into the secluded and mystical world of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Lo, also known as Upper Mustang. Once part of the Tibetan empire, this region maintains strong cultural and religious ties to Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism is still practiced here in one of its purest forms, and the villages are traditionally built in the Tibetan style — featuring whitewashed houses with firewood stacked on the roofs.  ThisTrek takes you into the hidden world of the ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Lo, a remote and mystical land that was once part of the Tibetan Empire. This region, often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” remained closed to outsiders until the early 1990s, preserving its unique Tibetan culture, traditions, and architecture.

The influence of Tibetan Buddhism is visible everywhere — from the whitewashed houses with firewood stacked on rooftops, to colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and centuries-old monasteries perched on rocky cliffs. The villages along the trail are still built in traditional Tibetan style, and the locals practice Buddhism in one of its purest forms. The trekking route follows the historic salt trade route, once used by Mustang’s people to trade Tibetan salt for grain from the lowlands. This journey leads you through a dramatic and arid landscape of red cliffs, eroded canyons, and windswept plateaus, culminating in the walled capital of Lo Manthang, the crown jewel of Upper Mustang.Located at an altitude of 3,800 meters, Lo Manthang is a medieval walled town with narrow alleyways, hidden courtyards, and timeless traditions.

From the Lo La Pass (3,950m), you can spot Lo Manthang shimmering in the distance. Stepping through the city gates feels like entering another world. Wandering the narrow alleyways, you’ll come across local women spinning wool and chatting in small groups — a scene that speaks to the timeless rhythm of life in this region.

The city is home to the royal palace, a striking four-story structure. While the king no longer holds official power, he is still highly respected by the local people. If you’re lucky, and the king is in residence, you might even be allowed a short visit. A short horseback ride takes you to Chhoser, a fascinating village known for its monastery and ancient cave dwellings carved high into the cliffs. These caves were once homes, meditation chambers, and storage spaces — offering a rare glimpse into ancient Himalayan life.

Lo Manthang also houses several ancient monasteries, including the impressive Thubchen Gompa, built in the 15th century. You can also visit the Amchi Museum and Amchi School, which preserve the ancient art of Tibetan medicine. An amchi is a traditional Tibetan doctor, and two amchis still practice in Lo Manthang — they are also the official doctors to the royal family and continue to pass on their wisdom through the school.

The Upper Mustang region, once restricted to only trekkers, is now accessible via motorcycle and four-wheel drive (4WD) tours — offering an exciting and adventurous way to explore the mystical landscape of this hidden Himalayan kingdom. With the construction of off-road trails reaching all the way to Lo Manthang, travelers can now enjoy a thrilling motorbike journey or jeep tour through dramatic desert-like valleys, ancient Tibetan villages, and windswept high passes.

This overland adventure allows you to experience the rich culture, ancient monasteries, and breathtaking scenery of Upper Mustang in a shorter time frame and with greater comfort. Whether you’re riding through the Kali Gandaki Gorge or witnessing the stunning panoramic views from Lo La Pass (3950m), every moment is unforgettable.
